What is the Canada eTA?

The Canada Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) is a digital travel authorisation required for eligible visa-exempt travellers flying to Canada for short stays. It is intended for visits such as tourism, family visits, short business activities, or transit.

The eTA is issued electronically by the Government of Canada and is linked directly to your passport. No physical visa label or stamp is required.

A valid Canada eTA generally allows multiple entries over a period of up to five years or until your passport expires, with stays of up to six months per visit, as determined by border officials. It does not permit employment or long-term residence in Canada.

Important for Canadian Permanent Residents and Dual Citizens

  • Canadian permanent residents must travel with a valid PR card or PR travel document and cannot use an eTA

  • Canadian citizens, including dual citizens, are not eligible for an eTA and must travel with a valid Canadian passport

Who Does Not Need Canada eTA?

You do not need a Canada eTA if you:

  • Are a Canadian citizen

  • Are a permanent resident of Canada

  • Hold a valid Canadian visa

  • Are a United States citizen

  • Are entering Canada by land or sea (for most travellers)

Travelling to Canada with an eTA

The Canada eTA applies only to visa-exempt travellers arriving in Canada by air, including those transiting through a Canadian airport.

If you are entering Canada by land or sea, an eTA is not required.

Travellers must have an approved eTA before boarding their flight to Canada. Airlines verify this electronically and will not allow boarding without a valid eTA.

Countries Eligible for the Canada eTA

The Canada eTA is available to passport holders from visa-exempt countries. Eligibility is determined strictly based on your nationality and passport.

Only specific travellers from certain visa-required countries may qualify under limited conditions set by Canadian authorities, such as holding a valid United States non-immigrant visa or having held a Canadian visa within the past 10 years.

If you are not eligible for the eTA, you may need to apply for a Canada Visitor Visa instead.
